Flexible Enrollment Courses

Semester-Based Courses

Identified by "FX" in the DDP catalog listing ("x" no longer appears after the course number), most flexible enrollment courses are offered through online collaborative learning environments (e.g., WebCT). Components can include a variety of media (videotapes, CDs, or DVDs), online materials, and textbooks.

There is no limit to the number of flexible enrollment courses or credits toward a WSU baccalaureate degree; the 25 percent limit (maximum 30 credit hours) no longer applies and flexible enrollment courses are no longer differentiated on transcripts.

Students should not expect to complete flexible enrollment courses in less than one semester.

All students taking online courses are expected to have e-mail and Web access.

Identified by "SB" in the DDP catalog listing, most semester-based courses are offered in online collaborative learning environments (e.g., WebCT). Components can include a variety of media (videotapes, CDs, or DVDs), online materials, and textbooks. Students are expected to maintain regular contact with their instructors via electronic mail (e-mail) or Web-based interactive media.

All students taking online courses are expected to have e-mail and Web access.

Credit Earned

Flexible Enrollment Courses

Semester-Based Courses

Credit is earned and a letter grade recorded for flexible enrollment courses; the grade is calculated into the WSU grade point average (GPA) for students admitted to WSU. Subject to allowances for drops and withdrawals, courses not completed in the time allowed will be recorded as an "F."

Credit is earned and a letter grade recorded for semester-based courses completed within the semester (or the specific term designated, if not a semester). The grade is calculated into the WSU grade point average (GPA) for students admitted to WSU. For degree-seeking students admitted to WSU, subject to allowances for drops and withdrawals, courses must be completed within the original semester/term (or the time allowed if an incomplete, "I," was granted) or they will be recorded as an "F."

  • For more detailed information about the topics covered in "Course Basics," please refer to the online "DDP Student Handbook.

Time Allowed

Flexible Enrollment Courses

Semester-Based Courses

Enrollment in flexible enrollment courses is possible at almost any time (open enrollment). (NOTE: Courses are attached to a semester depending on when you enroll and may be attached to a semester several weeks after that semester has started. Even though you may not start a course on the enrollment semester's actual start date, the end date for the attachment semester will still apply.)

A no-fee, one-semester extension will be granted automatically, if some course work is completed within the enrollment semester (if no work is done, you will be withdrawn).

At the end of the first semester extension, a second and final extension will be automatically granted if at least 50 percent of the course work has been completed. The $100 extension fee will be posted automatically to students' accounts. Students who qualify for an extension but do not wish to extend, must notify DDP to avoid the automatic extension. Students who do not qualify, and those who choose not to extend, will receive a grade of "F" for the course.

After the second extension, no further extensions are possible; students not completing the course in the final semester will receive a grade of "F" for the course.

NOTES:

  1. Students completing their degrees through DDP should review the course completion policy (CCP) since completion of additional course work is required for release of advising holds. However, be aware that the financial aid SAP policy differs from the DDP course completion policy and the the flexible enrollment course extension policy (extension policy)
  2. Students receiving financial aid—or those who anticipate receiving aid in the future—are expected to maintain a 2.0 GPA and successfully complete within the semester all courses for which they enrolled at the beginning of the semester, including flexible enrollment courses. Failure to maintain these satisfactory academic progress (SAP) guidelines can cause you to lose your financial aid for future semesters (see SAP guidelines).
  3. If you have questions, contact the DDP financial aid advisor at the WSU Office of Financial Aid.

Semester-based courses are term based by semester, unless noted otherwise: 15 weeks in length fall and spring (beginning late August and mid January) and 12 weeks in length summer (beginning mid May).

All semester-based courses are asynchronous, however, course work must be completed by specific deadlines in most courses, and students are expected to complete the courses within the semester of enrollment.

Semester-based courses will be open for registration during the University’s regular registration period only (see "Registration Period" below).

Registration Period
  Registration Opens Registration Closes*
Fall 2007 April 9, 2007 August 24, 2007
Spring 2008 November 5, 2007 January 11, 2008
* Registration for semester-based courses closes at the end of the first week of classes. During the second week of classes, you can register only with permission of the instructor (or the DDP Faculty/Student Services Coordinator, when prior arrangements have been made with the instructor). Semester-based registrations are not accepted after the second week of the semester.

In the course descriptions, time limits are noted only for those flexible enrollment courses and semester-based courses which are exceptions to the usual completion limits.

Tuition

Flexible Enrollment Courses

Semester-Based Courses

Flexible enrollment tuition (2007–2008 academic year: $232/credit hour) is the same for all students, residents or non-residents. Flexible enrollment tuition cannot be included in full-time tuition; all flexible enrollment tuition will be charged at the per-credit rate. (For example, a student enrolled in 6 flexible enrollment credits and 6 semester-based credits would not qualify for the full-time tuition rate; tuition would be calculated as 6 credits at the semester-based per-credit charge plus 6 credits at the flexible enrollment per-credit charge.)

NOTE: Flexible enrollment credits will be calculated in determining a student's full-time enrollment status for financial aid purposes. Full-time enrollment for financial aid is 12 or more credits (e.g., a student enrolled in 6 credits of semester-based courses and 6 credits of flexible enrollment courses would be considered a full-time student for financial aid purposes—but not for calculating tuition).

Tuition is payable to WSU and is due upon enrollment. For information regarding late-fee penalties on unpaid tuition, please reference (Tuition Due Dates/Late Fees).

Semester-based courses coordinated through DDP are offered year round on a course rotation basis, and tuition charged is the same per credit for all three semesters (fall, spring, and summer). Tuition is subject to a minimum charge of two (2) semester-based credits during fall and spring semesters (i.e., enrollment in only one [1] semester-based credit for fall and spring semesters is charged as two semester-based credits), payable to WSU, and due the first day of the semester.

WA Residents 2007-2008: WA resident tuition per credit hour for semester-based courses is the same as on-campus tuition, whether a student is a distance or a campus-based student.

  • Undergraduate resident tuition—$315/credit
    Full-time undergraduate resident tuition (fall & spring)*—$3145 (over 18 credits: $291/credit)
  • Graduate resident tuition—$378/credit
    Full-time graduate resident tuition (fall & spring)*—$3775 (over 18 credits: $354/credit)
Non-residents 2007-2008: Non-resident semester-based tuition per credit hour for distance students, including international students, is different than non-resident tuition for campus-based students. Amounts listed below are for distance students only.
  • Undergraduate non-resident—$460/credit
    Full-time undergraduate non-resident tuition (fall & spring)*—$4598 (over 18 credits: $436/credit)
  • Graduate non-resident—$554/credit
    Full-time graduate non-resident tuition (fall & spring)*—$5543 (over 18 credits: $531/credit)
International Students Residing Outside the United States: Same as non-resident.
This does not apply to U.S. citizens living abroad.

* Full-time Tuition (10 credit hours billed for 10–18 enrollment credits):
  • Fall and spring semesters, full-time tuition applies for students who are enrolled in semester-based courses but not in flexible enrollment courses. Students pay on a per-credit basis for all flexible enrollment courses; see Flexible Enrollment Tuition. (Full-time tuition does not apply for summer semester.)
  • Full-time tuition does not apply for international students residing outside the United States.

Methods of Payment:

  • Check (payable to WSU with your WSU ID # included on the check)

Financial Aid

Flexible Enrollment Courses

Semester-Based Courses

Students enrolled in a degree-seeking program are eligible to have flexible enrollment courses covered by financial aid.

Please note that the financial aid SAP policy differs from the DDP course completion policy (CCP) and the flexible enrollment course extension policy (extension policy). If you have questions, contact a WSU/DDP financial aid advisor.

Federal or state financial aid is available to eligible degree-seeking students admitted to WSU.

See the financial aid information in the online DDP Student Handbook (Financial Aid) or WSU’s Financial Aid Web page (www.finaid.wsu.edu) for more information and helpful links.

The financial aid process may take several months to complete. Start at least three months before you will need the aid, provide all information, and respond quickly to requests.

  • For more detailed information about the topics covered in "Course Basics," please refer to the online " DDP Student Handbook.

Change In Enrollment

Flexible Enrollment Courses

Semester-Based Courses

Drops within 30 days of enrollment (fall & spring semesters; 3 weeks summer semester) are eligible for a full tuition refund and do not appear on a student’s transcript. Drops after 30 days (fall & spring semesters; 3 weeks summer semester) are not eligible for a refund and depending on the time dropped, may result in a grade of "W" or "F." Contact DDP for specific information.

The impact of dropping semester-based courses depends on whether students are dropping all or some of their WSU courses and when the courses are dropped. Courses dropped within the first 30 calendar days of the semester may be eligible for a full or partial tuition refund, and there will be no transcript record.

Courses dropped after the first 30 days may receive a partial refund or no refund at all, and transcript records may be affected. Contact DDP for specific information.

Students receiving financial aid—or those who anticipate receiving aid—must maintain satisfactory academic progress (see "Financial Aid" above).

  • For more detailed information about the topics covered in "Course Basics," please refer to the online " DDP Student Handbook.
